MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (AP) - Prosecutors say a suburban Chicago school bus driver drove a busload of students home with a blood alcohol level that was nearly three times the legal limit.

Tandra Simonton of the Cook County state's attorney's office says 54-year-old Betty Burden admitted downing several vodka drinks before driving 50 students from Lions Park Elementary School.

A co-worker reportedly smelled alcohol on the woman's breath but didn't immediately tell officials. Mount Prospect police say the driver wasn't pulled over until she'd already completed her route.

Prosecutors say she had a blood alcohol level of 0.226 percent. The legal limit in Illinois is 0.08.

She's charged with aggravated driving under the influence and has been suspended without pay.

Burden couldn't be reached for comment. She doesn't have a listed phone number, and it isn't clear if she has an attorney.
