(CNN) - Two action films and a bi-coastal love story hit theaters this week ahead of the Labor Day holiday.

Academy Award winner George Clooney stars in "The American" as an assassin hiding out in the Italian countryside after a botched job. While waiting for his last assignment, he befriends a local priest and pursues a torrid affair with a beautiful woman. "The American" is rated R.

Betrayed by the organization that hired him, an ex-Mexican federal police officer goes on a brutal rampage against his former boss. Starring Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez, "Machete" is rated R.

In the romantic comedy "Going the Distance," sparks fly between Erin and Garrett, played by Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, as they try to keep their unexpected relationship alive from opposite coasts. "Going the Distance" is rated R.
